Of Love and Other Demons
About this deal
I bought this book for my grandaughter as a present, (I gave her 'A Hundred years of Solitude on her 15th. It may well be lost in translation but even if the author craftily intends for the reader to feel disturbed almost subliminally by the extreme physcology at work, then he doesn't do enough to provoke a reaction from this reader. But after she died they would flee the shacks to escape the midday heat and stretch out on the floor in every corner, or scrape the crust out of the rice pots and eat it, or play with the macuco and the tarabilla in the cool corridors. As he tends to her with holy water and sacramental oils, Delaura feels something shocking begin to occur. She was notorious for being a mender of maidenheads and an abortionist, although this was balanced by her admirable reputation for knowing Indian secrets that could heal the incurable.
I’d like to read some more Marquez - particularly ‘100 years of solitude’ - for the language if nothing more.
She is bitten by a possibly rabid dog, which leads to a series of events where the only possible cure is, of course: exorcism. He is well known for his unique literary style known as magical realism, in which he describes reality through magical events and elements. She was so certain of her reasoning that she did not mention the matter to her husband or think about it again until the following Sunday, when the maid went to the market alone and saw the carcass of a dog that had been hung from an almond tree to let everyone know it had died of rabies. Marquez handles the whole thing with great dignity, and highlights the strength of one's spirit is what remains when such intangible forces as love and power colide.
The writing is so atmospheric, and this is enhanced by the subtle magical realism in the book, which in my opinion is better than to start making weird things happen and fancy yourself very clever.
